The Kogi NLC Chairman, Gabriel Amari, said the rise in electricity tariffs by the Federal Government is like a daylight theft from Nigerians.
Amari said this on Monday while organized labor protested at the office of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company in Lokoja.
The NLC Chairman urged the government to lower the electricity tariffs, emphasizing that the current administration is causing severe hardship for innocent Nigerians.
“Increasing electricity tariffs is like a blatant robbery that we will not accept. They promised change, but we didn't question the type of change they are bringing.
“The government should understand that people are suffering because of their unfair policies. Nigerians are paying for electricity they don't use. It's under this administration that we're seeing unfair distribution of power. We can't continue like this,” he said.
Amari stated that if the government doesn't reverse the tariff increase, it will lead to a shutdown of the power sector.
“Privatization of the electricity sector is a complete failure and deceitful. We reject discrimination in electricity distribution by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). We'll keep resisting any form of exploitation by this government,” he added.
He emphasized that labor is the only voice that can stop the unfair government policies.
He said, “The Government promised us a new minimum wage but failed to implement it. They only know how to increase electricity tariffs without considering the masses. Nigerians are really suffering. It's time for the government to listen to the voices of Nigerians who want an end to these bad policies”.
He urged the government to provide all Nigerians with equal electricity distribution and hours.
The NLC Vice Chairman, Comrade Eleoja Opaluwa, demanded the immediate withdrawal of the new electricity tariffs, stressing that the power sector has been neglected by the government for many years.
