Have a wonderful Mother's Day to all the mothers and motherly figures reading today.
I'm particularly thankful for my mother, who is always by my side in good times and bad.
Apart from honoring my mom today, I'm reflecting on a touching moment I saw involving two other moms last week.
I had the opportunity to attend the opening of the Kelci Gibbons and James Justin Blewitt Community Kitchen at King's College in Wilkes-Barre last Monday.
Both Kelci and James had strong ties to King's College and a passion for helping others, so it was fitting that the kitchen was named in their honor.
Both of their mothers spoke lovingly about their children, the sadness after their deaths, and the love they still have for them.
While this is certainly a difficult day, both mothers should be very proud that their children leave a lasting legacy.
Kelci's and James' dedication to others and King's College will continue through the community kitchen, which is located in The Shoval Center for Community Engagement & Learning on North Franklin Street.
Students can visit for meals, snacks, produce and other foods to ensure they have the nutrients and meals they need for good health and success.
The center is a lovely house near the Campus Ministry building and promotes ongoing volunteer opportunities, service learning and social justice programs.
The community kitchen is one of the many services it provides, and now Kelci and James will be a part of its mission forever.
I was also excited to briefly attend a retirement celebration for James' mother, Dr. Joan Blewitt, at Connerton's Café on the King's campus in that same week.
Dr. Blewitt is a long-time friend of our family, and it was fantastic to see her recognized for her 42-year career at the college.
During her more than four decades there, she served as the director of King's Office of Career Planning and Placement, as well as a professor of management in the business administration department.
Throughout all those years, she mentored, guided and inspired college students to reach their highest potential.
In fact, 42 of her colleagues, students, family members and friends contributed to a beautiful glossy book showcasing those sentiments about Dr. Blewitt. The publication details her commitment to and fondness for all in the King's community.
To work at one place for so long is a remarkable achievement, and Dr. Joan did it with extraordinary passion for her job.
I wish her the very best in her next chapter and am happy she will have more time with her outstanding family — her husband, Charley; son and daughter-in-law, J.C. and Meghan; and grandchildren, Luke and Kaylee.
Happy Mother's Day to her — and all the mothers out there.
