A homeless man was reportedly attacked and had his things taken by another homeless person close to Haven for Hope in San Antonio on Wednesday.
The situation began when the victim was sleeping on a bus stop bench and was woken up by the accused. A disagreement happened. Officers were sent, and the two men were split up. The accused was seen leaving the area but came back about 30 minutes after the officers departed.
He allegedly knifed the victim in the stomach, took some of the man’s belongings, and then left the area. The victim was taken to the hospital and was said to be in stable condition.
Initial reports stated the accused was not caught; however, police later confirmed they had found him and had arrested him. The unidentified accused now faces charges of aggravated robbery.
Haven for Hope is a non-profit organization that runs a center for homeless services, offering rehabilitation programs and employment training on the same campus where it has transitional housing. The center's model has been successful in reducing unsheltered homelessness in San Antonio’s downtown area by 77%. credited The organization has trained security staff on site who work to prevent violent acts, and the shelter has reportedly rarely experienced violence on campus.
In 2022, two security guards and a homeless man were shot after a man was denied access to the shelter, SBG San Antonio. The suspect in that incident allegedly began fighting with the guards and took one’s firearm. All three of the parties involved sustained injuries from the altercation.
Closer to home, violence continues to be a problem on the streets of Dallas.
