Carroll Independent School District’s board unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday criticizing the Title IX changes made by President Biden.
“The CISD Board of Trustees opposes the recent changes to Title IX regulations suggested by the Biden administration, expressing deep worry about the potential negative impact on our students and community,” the resolution stated.
The resolution pointed out how several local leaders, including state Reps. Tony Tinderholt (R-Arlington) and Nate Schatzline (R-Fort Worth), have expressed opposition to the modification of Title IX.
The revisions to Title IX by the Biden administration, which will become effective in August, will broaden the law’s protections specifically to the LGBTQ community by stating that sex discrimination includes discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
Some advocates for parents’ rights to make decisions about their child’s education have spoken out against the change.
“We’re very concerned as parents about the fact that this new rule will override state law, all of the protections that we’ve worked to put into place in states around fundamental parental rights, stopping the teaching of gender ideology and sexual orientation instruction in schools,” Tiffany Justice, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, told Fox News.
CISD Board President Cameron Bryan criticized the Biden administration, arguing that the changes to Title IX are harmful to girls, and declared that the district will fight to protect them.
“So what the Biden administration is doing is redefining XX and XY to whatever you want to identify as. That is a very, very dangerous precedent, and this school district and this board will fight to make sure that our daughters and our girls are protected from boys entering bathrooms [and] locker rooms,” Bryan said after the resolution had been passed.
Speaking after the vote, CISD trustee Andrew Yeager highlighted the “common sense policies” that the board passed last year to ensure that “only CISD female students use female bathrooms, female locker rooms, and play on female sports teams.”
Bryan told The Dallas Express that Biden’s move would actually undermine Title IX.
“By using ‘gender identity’ to determine sex, the Biden administration is essentially discrediting the notion there is a biological difference between male and female. It is a false narrative that will end up doing the exact opposite of the underlying purpose of Title IX, the protection of women’s rights,” Bryan told DX.
The Biden administration, however, claims the revisions to Title IX ensure students of all kinds are protected from sex discrimination.
“For more than 50 years, Title IX has promised an equal opportunity to learn and thrive in our nation’s schools free from sex discrimination,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a news release. “These final regulations build on the legacy of Title IX by clarifying that all our nation’s students can access schools that are safe, welcoming, and respect their rights.”
“The final regulations advance Title IX’s promise of ensuring that no person experiences sex discrimination, including sex-based harassment or sexual violence, in federally funded education. The final regulations restore and strengthen vital protections for students, and provide schools with information to meet their Title IX obligations while offering appropriate discretion and flexibility to account for variations in school size, student populations, and administrative structures,” read the release.
Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, commended the action taken by the Biden administration.
“We are excited to see more detailed guidelines that safeguard all students from politically motivated broad bans—such as banning books, history, or certain students based on sexuality or gender identity—that have no place in a country that values freedom and equality,” she stated in a statement.
