Sam Hargrave, who directed 'Extraction', has been hired by Mattel Films and Skydance to work on their upcoming 'Matchbox' movie, which is inspired by die-cast toy cars. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are writing the script.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger from Skydance, along with Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films, will produce the movie 'Matchbox'. Aimee Rivera from Skydance, and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell from Mattel Films will oversee the project.
Details about the plot of the movie have not been disclosed.
The Matchbox brand originated in 1953 from die-cast company Lesney Products, which was acquired by Mattel in 1997. Their initial successful product was a model of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation coach, which sold over 1 million toy models. The Matchbox car is known for its small size and detailed design, with various sizes and configurations attempted over the years. Eventually, the company settled into producing tiny die-cast cars in blister packs that are typically displayed in toy stores, grocery stores, and pharmacies.
Sam Hargrave, a former stuntman and stunt coordinator, has worked on movies such as the 'Hunger Games' series, 'Captain America: Civil War', 'Atomic Blonde', and 'Avengers: Endgame.' He made his directorial debut with Netflix’s 'Extraction', featuring Chris Hemsworth, and directed the sequel, 'Extraction 2', in 2023.
David Coggeshall recently wrote for Apple TV+’s “The Family Plan” and the “Orphan” prequel “Orphan: First Kill.” Jonathan Tropper, a novelist and the creator of “Banshee” and “Warrior”, wrote the screenplay for Skydance’s Netflix time travel adventure “The Adam Project.” He and David Coggeshall will write the script for the movie based on the die-cast toy cars.
