Susan Buckner, most famous for her role as student cheerleader Patty Simcox in the popular teen musical “Grease,” has died at the age of 72.
The former actress and beauty pageant winner passed away on May 2 in the presence of her loved ones, according to a statement from Buckner’s family publicist Melissa Berthier. The cause of death was not disclosed.
In a statement to People, Buckner’s daughter Samantha Mansfield said, “The warmth and positivity she brought to every room will be deeply missed.” Buckner passed away at their family residence in Florida.
Born on Jan. 28, 1952 in Seattle, Washington, the actress initially gained recognition as a beauty pageant contestant, winning the title of Miss Washington in 1971 before going on to become a top 10 finalist in the 1972 Miss America pageant.
She made her acting debut on “The Dean Martin Show” as part of the all-female singing and dancing group “The Golddiggers.” She later portrayed a cast member in the successful musical film “Grease,” appearing alongside John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Her other projects include “The Krofftettes,” “Police Academy 6: City Under Siege,” “The Mac Davis Show,” “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour,” “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries,” and her final role, “1 vs 100.”
After stepping away from acting, she devoted herself to raising her two children. Although she did not return to acting, she pursued a career in teaching and also worked as a dance instructor in Coral Gables, Florida.
She is survived by her children Mansfield and Adam Josephs, as well as her grandchildren Oliver Riley, Abigail, and Ruby. Other surviving family members include her sister Linda, her daughter-in-law Noel Josephs, son-in-law Adam Mansfield, and her partner Al. In a tribute to Buckner, her family has asked for donations to be made to Miami’s Fairchild Botanic Garden.
