In the days after the Pittsburgh Steelers decided not to exercise the fifth-year option for running back Najee Harris, speculations arose about the Steelers potentially trading Harris to the Dallas Cowboys . However, NFL Network’s Jane Slater dismissed the rumors.
On May 6, Slater tweeted that a source in the Dallas organization informed her that the Harris-Cowboys trade rumors are baseless.
“Regarding these Najee Harris and Cowboys reports, a team source told me 'click bait,' wrote Slater on X (formerly Twitter).
The Cowboys signed running back Ezekiel Elliott this offseason, bringing him back to Dallas after a year with the New England Patriots.
. Nonetheless, rumors persist around the Cowboys, who may need additional production in their backfield as they aim for a championship in 2024.
The Steelers surprised many in the team’s media by not opting for Harris’ fifth-year option on May 2. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac stated that the Steelers “want to wait and see” how Harris performs in the team’s new offense before committing to a long-term deal.
ESPN’s Brooke Pryor also had a similar report, saying She wrote the team is “not ruling out agreeing to a deal with Harris” after the 2024 season, although local media is already expecting this to be Harris’ final year in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittipaldo mentioned on The North Shore Drive Podcast on May 6 that there’s a 90 to 95 percent chance Harris will not return to the Steelers after 2024.
