WILKES-BARRE — Congressman Matt Cartwright stated on Monday that the efforts of our local governments to assist with affordable housing are extremely important, and the federal assistance will ensure that this work persists.
Cartwright, D-Moosic, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, disclosed that more than $17 million is returning to the area to aid in the construction, renovation, and modernization of public housing across Northeast Pennsylvania.
“These funds will maintain the strength of our communities and guarantee that at-risk residents, including the elderly and those with disabilities, will have a secure place to live,” Cartwright commented.
The grants, which are allocated through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Capital Fund Program, provide yearly funding to all public housing authorities nationwide.
Housing authorities can utilize these funds to carry out extensive improvements such as replacing roofs or implementing energy-efficient enhancements to heating systems and incorporating water conservation measures.
The housing authorities that will receive funding through HUD’s Capital Fund Program:
• Luzerne County Housing Authority: $3.93 million.
• Wilkes-Barre Housing Authority: $2.45 million.
• Pittston Housing Authority: $1.03 million.
• Hazleton Housing Authority: $768,190.
• Lackawanna County Housing Authority: $3.1 million.
• Monroe County Housing Authority: $894,564.
