The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has started looking into the abduction of a four-month-old baby at gunpoint in the Itu Local Government Area. The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, confirmed the incident on Monday and stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, has ordered an investigation into the incident.
She mentioned, "We know about the incident and we are working on it. The CP has already ordered an investigation into the incident."
Udeme Eyo, the father of the abducted baby, and his wife appealed to security agencies to help recover their baby who was kidnapped at gunpoint in their house.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. on Saturday in their family home near the PCN Primary School, East Itam.
The father described the terrifying incident, saying his family was woken by a loud bang on the door at about 3 a.m. Two big men entered their bedroom and demanded their baby.
He recalled, "I was half asleep when I heard the bang on the door. I jumped out of my bed but the door was forced to the ground. Two unfamiliar men came in and asked for my son. I tried to stop them but they brought out guns and machetes, I backed off.
“They took the child from my wife, who was screaming, pushed her aside, and escaped with the baby. When I went out to alert my neighbors, I saw them drive off in a car parked nearby.
“As I speak, my wife is completely traumatized. We lost our first child at the same age and now that she was being comforted by the new baby boy, this has happened. I’m completely confused,” the husband expressed.
The village head of the community, Prof. Efanga Usua, expressed fear and disappointment, saying that such an incident was rare in the area until recently when a mentally disturbed woman was deprived of her baby by unknown motorcyclists.
He mentioned that there are plans to convene a meeting of the East Itam Northern Traditional Rulers to address such alarming occurrences.
