Gbenga Oluwafemi, who is said to be the landlord of the suspected gang renting out 86 apartments under Dolphin Estate Bridge, Ikoyi, has denied receiving N250,000 per year as rent.
Oluwafemi, also known as “Mopol,” said in a video posted by News Central that there's no estate chairman in Dolphin Estate who wouldn't recognize him.
In a phone call, Mopol stated, "No estate chairman in Dolphin Estate would say they didn't know me.
“Even some influential people in Lagos State who live there know me very well."
“The blue container that was demolished this morning had been there for about 15 years now.
“The previous government did it for us there. Festus Keyamo, who saw us there, inquired about our presence and how we survive.
“We explained that we provide security for the street lights. He also asked how we cope when it's raining. That's when he promised to look into it, and that's how the container was built.”
However, he denied collecting money as rent, despite claims from some residents and evidence of payments.
“I have never refunded any money to anybody. I don’t think I’ve… If I am collecting N250,000 from anybody, I will not be in that place again,” he said.
Efforts to make arrests
The Lagos State Government had on Saturday intensified its efforts to arrest suspected gang leaders who rented out the 86 apartments. disclosed Meanwhile, a resident named Sola in a video identified one man called “Mopol” as his landlord who collected N250,000 from him.
Another resident, Johnson Kenneth, mentioned that he had recently made a N50,000 deposit before the government intervened.
Also, a December 2022 receipt with “OLUWAFEMI” as the letterhead and phone number, being payment for N150,000 for a room, was found among the residents.
The Commander of Kick Against Indiscipline in Lagos State described the act on the government facility as sabotage.
“All the sand put under the bridge for protection were excavated and structures were erected, totaling about 86 rooms.
“You can imagine removing sand meant for protection and putting up structures there to collect money from people. That is sabotage,” Cole said.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the government discovered 86 partitioned rooms of different sizes under the bridge.
