Former George Finidi, a former player for Ipswich Town, is very happy about the team's return to the Premier League after an 18-year absence. They won 2-0 against Huddersfield in a Championship game at Portman Road on Saturday, as reported by Punch Sports Extra.
Finidi joined Ipswich Town in 2001 for £3.1 million from Real Mallorca and played 46 games, scoring eight goals. He was unable to prevent the team from being relegated from the Premier League that year.
The Nigerian footballer stayed at Portman Road until his contract was terminated in 2003.
Finidi told PUNCH Sports Extra, “I’m really happy for Ipswich Town FC.”
“They (Ipswich) deserve it after trying for so long to get back to elite football; finally, they got the ticket.”
Wes Burns scored the first goal for Ipswich, and Omari Hutchinson added another early in the second half with a shot from the edge of the box.
Ipswich only needed one point to secure promotion, and Kieran McKenna’s side dominated much of the game, putting constant pressure on Huddersfield's goal.
Ipswich finished the season with 96 points, just one less than champions Leicester. They are the first team since Southampton in 2011–12 to move from the third tier to the first in consecutive seasons.
McKenna is the fifth Ipswich manager to lead the team to the top flight, following Alf Ramsey in 1961, Bill McGarry in 1968, John Lyall in 1992, and George Burley in 2000, the latter achieving it through the play-offs.
