The Osun State University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo is dealing with a lot of unclaimed bodies in the morgue.
The hospital has given a 14-day period for family members to collect bodies that have been in the morgue between January 2019 and June 2023.
If the bodies are not claimed after 14 days, they will be buried together to free up space in the morgue.
The management of UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital in Osogbo has announced that the morgue is currently overcrowded with unclaimed bodies.
The hospital is asking relatives with bodies in the morgue between January 2019 and June 2023 to collect them within 14 days.
If the bodies are not retrieved within 14 days, the management will proceed with a mass burial.
In September 2023, the Federal Medical Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, also set a two-week deadline for the retrieval of nine unclaimed corpses from its morgue.
The Public Relations Officer of the medical centre, Miss Esther Bature, announced the ultimatum for the retrieval of nine unclaimed corpses in the Keffi Local Government Area of the state.
The management issued the deadline because some of the bodies were brought to the hospital in 2021 and others in 2022, which is beyond the permitted six-month time limit.
Sometimes, the relatives of accident victims may not be aware of where their loved ones are, leading to unclaimed bodies in hospitals.
Relatives of the deceased may also avoid claiming the bodies due to accumulated bills.
