The Chicago Bulls might get a chance to fix a big mistake from recent times.
Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas promised changes to the team after their 39-43 season and missing the playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons.
As confidence in him started to decrease within the organization , another big move might be necessary.Karnisovas has the freedom to lead the team in any direction he wants.
He has also said that he doesn't want to rebuild the team. Instead, he may consider undoing a trade that happened before him which started the current version of the Bulls.

Jimmy Butler Miami Heat – 2027 first-round pick
Bulls get:
– – 2030 first-round pick swap
Heat get:
– Zach LaVine
– Dalen Terry
The Bulls have been trying to trade LaVine for over a year. The Heat were
one of the potential teams interested at one point. Terry would be an unfortunate casualty in the deal.
It is unclear how interested the Heat would be in LaVine now that has a four-year, $120 million contract
. Adding the remaining three years of LaVine's Tyler Herro five-year, $215.1 million deal might not be acceptable for the Heat. But Herro played as Miami's point guard last season and they might make changes. Jimmy Butler, Heat Heading Toward Crossroads “The Heat, when healthy, remain strong, and Butler is valuable,”
The Athletic’s David Aldridge wrote
on May 3. “But there have been rumors this year that Butler and the Heat may no longer be on the same page.”
Aldrige points out Butler’s individualism but says the Heat have mostly accepted it. It’s not just about Butler’s performance, although he is still at the center of their plans. There is a desire for changes when Butler is looking for continuity. “I think there’s a chance for significant changes with the Heat this summer, because there’s always that possibility with the Heat,” ESPN’s Zach Lowe said on “
The Lowe Post
” podcast on May 3. “But it starts with Jimmy Butler who didn’t perform the same this year, even when he was healthy.”
Lowe noted Butler's reduced effectiveness in two-point field goals and ongoing concerns about his durability. Butler played in less than 70 games for the 11th time in his 13-year career.Butler's current contract is athree-year, $146.4 million deal
and he has earned
$263.2 million in his career according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
He has made Lowe said, “His impact goes beyond just his stats, but that wasn't the case this year. It wouldn't surprise me if there are rumors about trading Jimmy Butler this offseason if contract talks don't go well. Because if I'm Jim Butler, I want all the money. I want all the money. I saved your franchise.”The Bulls are now in a similar position to the Heat before they traded for Butler. 2024 Bulls are resembling the 2019 Heat before they acquired Jimmy Butler.
Lowe mentions how Butler helped the Heat become a
team that consistently makes it to the playoffs
and their advancement to the Eastern Conference Finals supports his argument that Butler saved the franchise.
The Heat had just finished a 39-43 season in 2018-19. They had not made the playoffs in three of the past five seasons before getting Butler. The deal was a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers , who could be a potential trade partner again this offseason.
They have made it to the playoffs in the last five seasons. The Bulls could replace LaVine’s salary with Butler’s in this trade and also gain something they’ve been missing for a few years: toughness. The Heat would become younger while also adding draft picks. This trade proposal would involve the Chicago Bulls bringing back one of their former key players during a time of uncertainty about his future.
They have made the playoffs in each of the last five seasons.
The Bulls can replace LaVine’s money with Bulter’s in this trade while adding something they’ve lacked for a few years: toughness. The Heat would get younger in addition to adding draft capital.
