The University of Abuja's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, stated that academic and administrative activities will carry on despite the internal strike declared by the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities chapter.
The VC announced this during a meeting with the Provost, deans, directors, and heads of academic departments. Dr. Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Public Affairs, confirmed this on Friday.
The VC was reported as saying, "The university's management does not consider the institution to be on strike.
Some individuals claimed a strike had been declared, but the management, along with all of us, has agreed that the university's regular activities must continue.
The VC labeled the strike as "divisive and unnecessary" and pledged that the management would not permit the university to be disrupted again.
He also refuted the union's allegations, including the advertisement for the Vice-Chancellor position, unauthorized recruitment, promotions, delayed deanship elections, and establishment of a microfinance bank, asserting that the university had followed proper procedures in all these matters.
“Despite the strike, the university’s exam will continue, and the senate meeting will proceed as scheduled,” Na’Allah said.
The VC stressed that the university's calendar will remain unaffected, and all activities will proceed as usual.
The UniAbuja chapter of ASUU had announced a decision to go on strike on Thursday, citing concerns about the appointment of a new VC, alleged unauthorized recruitment and promotions, among other issues.
However, the VC has maintained that the university has followed proper procedures in all these matters and deems the strike unnecessary and divisive.
