The National Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Kano Electricity Distribution Company have been ordered by a Federal High Court in Kano to not put into effect the new electricity pricing for Band A consumers.
The case labeled FHC/KN/CS/144/2024 was brought by Super Sack Company Limited and BBY Sacks Limited.
Also involved are Mama Sannu Industries Limited, Dala Foods Nigeria Limited, Tofa Textile Limited, and Manufacturers Association Of Nigeria Limited.
However, in response to an urgent motion by Abubakar Mahmoud, the plaintiffs' lawyer, the judge, Abdullahi Liman, directed NERC and KEDCO to hold off on the upcoming pricing until the motion on notice is heard and resolved.
The ruling also prevents the defendant from pressuring and warning to cut off the applicants’ power supply for refusing to accept the increased pricing.
NERC permitted a rise in electricity pricing for customers under the Band A category in April.
Under the new pricing, customers in this category, who receive 20 hours of electricity supply daily, would start paying N225 per kilowatt from April 3 — up from N66.
The sudden increase has been condemned by the House of Representatives and other interested parties who have urged NERC to halt the introduction of the new pricing.
