Coach Lasisi Mayowa, also called Coach Mayor, is receiving medical help totaling N402,000 from the boxing community, as reported by The PUNCH.
Mayowa, a respected figure in boxing, is being treated for a serious kidney issue at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, after being moved from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
The support from the boxing community and well-wishers on social media has been remarkable.
From the hospital, Mayowa’s wife, Funmilayo, expressed thanks for the overwhelming support and provided an update on Mayowa’s condition.
“He is improving and managed to eat some food today (Thursday), although it was only pap and he didn’t finish. We are thankful,” said Funmilayo.
Funmilayo explained that they relocated Mayowa to Ibadan, Oyo State because he was not getting proper care in Lagos.
“We left the hospital in Lagos because they couldn’t give us a date to see the doctor and his condition was worsening. So, we came to Ibadan where he is now being attended to. We did a test today (Thursday) and will do another tomorrow,” she said.
Funmilayo conveyed deep appreciation for the donations, saying, “I want to thank and pray for everyone sending us money; my family and I are grateful. I pray that their source of help continues. I am very thankful that they didn’t abandon us.”
Further contributions can be made to the account of Lasisi Mayowa at GTBank, with the account number 0132024908, according to Funmilayo.
Coach Mayowa, known for his contributions to boxing development, has trained several boxers from his club in Lagos and was a founding member of the YUCATECO Boxing League. His children have also excelled in boxing, with his son and daughter winning medals at the 2023 National Youth Festival in Asaba, Delta State.
