14 prisoners who escaped from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State have been captured.
Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, revealed this to our correspondent on Thursday evening.
A heavy rain on Wednesday night caused extensive damage to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, leading to the escape of 119 inmates.
The heavy rain resulted in severe damage to the custodial centre’s buildings, including a breach in the perimeter fence, which allowed inmates to escape.
Ten escaped inmates were previously captured.
After inspecting the damage caused by a heavy rain at the custodial centre in Suleja, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo emphasized the urgent need for reforms in over 240 custodial centres across the country.
Tunji-Ojo promised the full commitment of the Federal Government to recapturing the remaining escaped inmates.
However, Duza said, “Our intelligence officers, armed squadron officers, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and other security agencies, are searching neighboring communities to find the escaped inmates.
“14 escaped inmates have been recaptured so far. The search is still ongoing.”
