The Nigerian Army's special task force, Operation Safe Haven, has held an important meeting with influential people from Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
As per a statement on Wednesday from the Nigerian Army's X handle, the aim was to deal with the return of criminal attacks that have troubled the areas, leading to the deaths of innocent people.
The meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the 3 Division Nigerian Army on April 24, 2024, was led by Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Safe Haven.
Abubakar expressed his disappointment about the repeated security breaches and stressed the importance of addressing the causes of conflict in the region to prevent further disruptions of law and order.
“The commander expressed displeasure over the reoccurring breach of security, which has resulted in the death of innocent civilians. The commander reiterated the triggers of conflict on the Plateau, which he emphasised must be adequately addressed to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
“He urged the stakeholders to support the resettlement efforts of government and security agencies, thereby allowing displaced persons to return back to their ancestral homes,” the statement noted.
He also disclosed that some perpetrators of the recent attacks have been apprehended, with weapons and motorcycles recovered, while operations continue to bring the remaining culprits to justice.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang, represented by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ephraim Usman, acknowledged the erosion of trust among the people.
“He opined that the people have lost trust in each other, and the government must work to realign the people. The governor reiterated the government’s commitment to policing the state and making it safe for innocent citizens.
“The various stakeholders who spoke during the meeting emphasised the need for genuine dialogue and forgiveness between warring parties to move forward and allow the state to achieve economic prosperity,” the statement added.
The meeting brought together top government officials, religious and traditional leaders, youth leaders, and socio-cultural groups.
