LEHMAN TWP. — As it did last year — as it seems to every year — the yearly meeting between the Wyoming Area and Lake-Lehman track and field teams held some significance for the regular season.
Unbeaten records at stake, the leading position in WVC Division 2 up for grabs.
Wyoming Area’s boys and girls teams both took to the track on Wednesday aiming to stay unbeaten. Despite a strong challenge from Lake-Lehman, the Warriors managed to do so.
The Warrior girls gave the Black Knights their first loss of the conference season with an 89-61 win, while the boys solidified their first place position and improved to 5-0 with an 86-64 victory at Lake-Lehman.
“I thought both of our teams were prepared for this meet,” said Wyoming Area coach Joe Pizano. “I believe our freshmen, especially on the girls side, made a significant impact.”
The two meets followed slightly different paths to achieve the same end result: the Wyoming Area boys established an early lead and gave themselves enough advantage to secure victory even as the Black Knights won a few of the later events.
For the girls, Lake-Lehman kept up well in the opening events, keeping the Warriors within reach for about half of the meet.
Then, the Warriors took a commanding lead: they won six consecutive events in the middle part of the meet, turning a very narrow two-point lead into a 77-41 advantage with four events, defeating the Black Knights.
“Our goal was to perform strongly in every event, we don’t focus on the end or the beginning of the meet,” Pizano said. “We just go through and identify where we can gain points.”
The Warriors had six different winners in those six events, including one of the team’s standout freshmen, Shannon Kearns.
Kearns, already a victor in the 3200 relay to start the day, outpaced the competition to win the 300 hurdles, the first of Wyoming Area’s six-event streak. She would claim one more victory with the 1600 relay team to conclude her day.
Fellow freshman Isabella Costa secured a win in the 200 meter dash for Wyoming Area. Taylor Gashi and Ella McKernan each secured two individual victories for the Warriors: Gashi triumphed in the triple jump and the long jump, while McKernan earned wins in the 400 dash and the 800 run.
On the boys’ side, the Warriors triumphed in all three of the throwing events and excelled in the short-distance races. Aaron Crossley continued to accumulate victories in the 100 dash, completing it in 11.3 seconds to lead a full Warrior podium.
Lydia Vivian was the top performer for Lehman in the girls’ meet, claiming victory in the 100 hurdles, the high jump and aiding her team’s 400 relay.
Stephen Martin (1600 and 3200 runs) and Seth Berry (high jump and long jump) each secured two individual victories for the Lake-Lehman boys team.
