The Anambra State House of Assembly has approved a law to forbid secret cult activities and similar behaviors and to address related issues.
The bill was reviewed and passed into law by the state House on Wednesday after being read for the third time.
The executive bill was carefully examined by the House Committee before being approved.
The Majority Leader of the House, Ikenna Ofodeme, stated that the law will help save the lives of Ndi Anambra and give authorities the power to take strong actions against offenders.
Ofodeme expressed gratitude to the legislators for supporting the government in advancing the peace, security, and social unity in the state. He added that when signed by the governor, the bill will mark a new phase in the ongoing efforts to promote peace, security, and social harmony in the state.
He mentioned that the bill states that anyone involved in a secret cult, regardless of possessing a weapon, will be imprisoned for life or a minimum of 21 years without the option of a fine upon conviction.
He stated that the law aims to stop secret cult activities and related offenses, establish a legal framework to prevent and penalize such behaviors, and associated crimes.
The Speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze, recognized the recent outcry concerning cult-related activities in the state and emphasized the importance of the law in addressing the issue.
Udeze pointed out that the law will become effective on May 7, 2024, once the governor approves it, and is considered a vital step in resolving the situation.
The speaker praised the legislators for swiftly passing the bill, which received unanimous support through a voice vote.
Stakeholders and residents in Awka and its surroundings have expressed concern over cult-related violence in recent times.
Reports indicate that over 15 individuals have been killed in Awka and the surrounding areas due to clashes between suspected rival cult groups since Easter Sunday.
The conflicts were reportedly driven by competition for transportation revenue, control of the market, and community leadership.
