Enyimba head coach, Finidi George, is becoming more confident about his team’s potential to keep the Nigeria Premier Football League title at the end of the season despite being two points behind leaders Enugu Rangers, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The People’s Elephant have won a record nine NPFL titles and with seven more games to the end of the season, they hope to make it 10 as they sit second in the table with 52 points after 31 games.
On Sunday, they brightened their chances with a 1-1 draw against Sunshine Stars in Akure, thanks to a second half goal by Chidiebere Nnachi, which cancelled out Promise Awosanmi’s opener for the hosts.
Finidi noted that the point wasn’t easy to come by, but also described it as the needed boost for their title challenge.
“It was a difficult one, let’s say the game was 50-50 and I think a draw is good enough for us. They wanted to win and we also wanted to get something out of it. We didn’t see a lot of chances, but I think a draw was good enough. I’m quite happy with the one point that we have here (Akure) and we will build on it,” Finidi said after the game.
“I think we have a chance to aim for the trophy again. We will see how we can win at home. We will push till the end of the season. Others are also playing to achieve the same thing but this is Enyimba, we don’t give up.”
With the draw in Akure, Finidi’s men have earned 12 points on the road in the NPFL and their hopes to claim the top spot were boosted by Enugu Rangers’ 2-0 loss against Rivers United in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
In the run-in to the end of the season, they will face Rangers in a potential title decider with other clashes against Katsina United, Abia Warriors, Rivers, Bayelsa United, Sporting Lagos and Plateau United in their last game of the season.
