Cops are investigating a stabbing that killed a man on Friday in northern Dallas, according to the Dallas Police Department.
Police were called about a stabbing at around 3:10 p.m. in the 5800 block of Ridgecrest Rd, just northeast of the intersection of U.S. 75 and Loop 12 in Council Member Gay Donnell Willis’ District 13.
“When officers arrived, they found 53-year-old Biong Deng Kual, unresponsive at the location,” DPD mentioned in a department blog post. said in a department blog post.
Dallas Fire-Rescue first responders came to the scene and took Kual to a local hospital, but he didn't survive. DPD noted that the case will be referred to a grand jury.
“This happened near a church, where there is a lot of gathering and drinking happening daily,” said social media user Dennis Taylor, in a Facebook post about the stabbing by Fox 4 KDFW. commenting on a Facebook post about the stabbing published by Fox 4 KDFW.
According to the City of Dallas crime analytics dashboard, there have been 63 murders in Dallas this year as of April 19. Last year, there was a roughly 15% increase in criminal homicides compared to 2022 as Dallas continues to suffer from a significant police shortage.
DPD has been understaffed for several years, fielding only around 3,000 officers even though a City report previously advised a force of roughly 4,000 is necessary to properly meet public safety needs and reduce lengthy police response times.
Relatedly, City officials only budgeted $654 for DPD this fiscal year, choosing to spend a lot less taxpayer money on public safety than high-crime jurisdictions like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City.
