A member of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, was buried in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State after passing away during the Nigeria vs South Africa match.
The late Ojougboh passed passed away at the age of 64 on February 7, 2024, while watching the semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa during the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire
A close source to the politician stated, “Cairo Ojougboh, a medical doctor, died during the Nigeria vs South Africa match.
“The incident occurred when Nigeria was penalized. Dr. Ojougboh was reported to have yelled and collapsed due to a severe heart attack when South Africa scored.
Ojougboh served as the representative for the Ika Federal Constituency from 2003-2007 in the House of Representatives.
During the funeral service at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Agbor, Rev’d Fr. Charles Uganwa criticized Nigerian politicians for lack of progress after 64 years of nationhood,
He expressed, “I’m urging all beings to be ready for death daily because death is unavoidable for all humans.
“Dr. Cairo Ojougboh was a patriot, nationalist, statesman, socialite, and a man of the people who dedicated his life to serving God and humanity.
“I also want to remind politicians of the necessity to view their position as a platform for providing selfless services.
The clergyman also mentioned that “it is unreasonable for Nigerians to endure under-development and lack of electricity after 64 years of nationhood.
He urged the deceased's family to draw closer to Christ who has called their father home.
Uganwa urged the Governor Sheriff Oborevweri-led administration to do more in human capital development and the revival of struggling industries as a means to address unemployment.
In his statement, Nkem Ojougboh, the son of the deceased, stated that his father made lasting impacts and pledged on behalf of his family to honor him by upholding his legacies.
He expressed gratitude to all those who stood with his family since his father's passing and requested ongoing prayers for them to remain steadfast during this time of mourning.
The state Governor, Oborevweri; former governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; and other prominent figures were present at Ojougboh’s funeral.
