The movie 'Civil War' from A24 is in a close battle with Universal's new horror movie 'Abigail' at the box office. It currently has the advantage with $11 million earned in its second weekend.
The dark and futuristic movie is maintaining a decent performance, with a decrease of about 56% from its $26 million opening weekend. This brings its total earnings over 10 days to $44.2 million. Despite having a production budget of $50 million, the movie is on track to be a modest success at the box office due to foreign presales helping to lower the break-even point.
“Abigail” is closely trailing “Civil War” with an opening earning of $10 million from 3,384 locations. The film is based on the 1936 classic Universal film “Dracula’s Daughter” and is directed by the “Scream VI” filmmaking duo Radio Silence. 'Abigail' reportedly carries a budget of $28 million and is expected to surpass the break-even point. The film has been well-received, with an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B on CinemaScore, which is a strong grade for an R-rated horror film.
Lionsgate’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” is vying against the fourth weekend of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” for the No. 3 position on the charts, with an estimated opening of around $9 million from 2,845 theaters.
The film is directed by Guy Ritchie and features Henry Cavill in a leading role. It is said to have a budget of $60 million and was co-produced and financed by a group of production partners including Black Bear Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
With the sharing of costs and traditional strategies such as foreign distribution presales, sources at the studio believe that “Ungentlemenly Warfare” will be a profitable film for them. However, it is anticipated to join recently released films directed by Ritchie in opening below $10 million, including “The Covenant” and “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.”
