The Nigeria Correctional Service denies the claim that Bobrisky, who received a six-month prison sentence for mishandling naira notes, was transferred from Ikoyi to Kirikiri in Lagos.
There were reports that Bobrisky was moved to Kirikiri Prison last weekend to finish his sentence discreetly.
An NCoS official contradicted this by stating that he was still being held in Ikoyi. PUNCH Metro The official, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed on Thursday that Bobrisky was still in Ikoyi prison.
The official, who chose not to be identified, explained that Bobrisky did not commit a serious enough crime to justify being moved to a maximum prison, where those with life or death sentences are usually held.
Another official, also speaking anonymously, mentioned plans to transfer inmates between facilities but stressed that it was still under consideration.
An NCoS official added that any potential move would be aimed at reducing overcrowding.
The NCoS official further stated that such moves are made to alleviate overcrowding in the facilities.
The official explained that sometimes inmates are relocated to ease overcrowding, especially if they have a communicable disease or at their request for family proximity or humanitarian reasons.
It was also mentioned that the leadership may decide to spread inmates with short sentences, like Bobrisky, to free up space for those awaiting trial, but these individuals seldom go to maximum security prisons.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the NCS Lagos State Command, Rotimi Oladokun, were unsuccessful.
PUNCH Metro It was reported that Bobrisky shares a cell with male inmates and underwent an examination upon admission, which confirmed no change in gender or genital organs.
A source revealed that Bobrisky has been following the rules and procedures in the facility.
Bobrisky was arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, for reportedly spraying new naira notes at a movie premiere in Lagos on March 24, 2024.
After admitting to mishandling naira, Bobrisky was convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, April 5, 2024.
The EFCC brought six accusations against him, with the initial four accusations being about misusing naira, and the final two accusations involving suspected money washing.
Before stating the charges, the EFCC legal representative asked the court to drop counts five and six.
Bobrisky admitted to the four naira misuse accusations. Before being found guilty, he requested forgiveness, saying he didn't know about the laws regarding naira misuse and promised to educate his followers on social media about it.
