A24 is facing criticism for posters from its latest film, “Civil War” – partly because they’re not actually from the movie.Civil War” – because they’re not genuinely from the film. People on social media are alleging that the studio used artificial intelligence to create the six posters shared on Instagram.
The posters depict various American landmarks in states of destruction. However, users quickly noticed that something seemed off about these posters.
An image of the Chicago river has particularly grabbed people’s attention. The image depicts boats filled with refugees seemingly heading in opposite directions. Additionally, the two Marina Towers appear on opposite sides of the river in the poster, when in reality, they are located next to each other on the same side. Furthermore, the Miami poster shows a car with three doors, which is highly unusual.
“I’m very frustrated to see a studio that supports genuine artists using subpar artificial intelligence to promote a movie. It’s a bad look. A sad day,” commented one user on Instagram.
“AI garbage,” posted another user.
“Why do you continue to share these absurd AI posters?” inquired a user. “Employ a real artist.”
A24 did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
These images are also being questioned for another reason: None of these elaborate, high-budget scenes actually appear in Alex Garland’s film. “Civil War” is A24’s most costly film to date with an estimated budget of $50 million. However, the visuals depicted in the posters would require a budget double or triple that amount.
“Spoiler alert, none of this is in the movie,” stated an Instagram user.
The dystopian movie is set in the near future and follows a group of journalists traveling across the United States during a civil war. The cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jesse Plemons, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman.
