Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has instructed the organization of a logo design competition from April 19th to 26th.
The Osun State House of Assembly repealed the state Anthem, Crest, and Flag Law 2012 in July 2023 and replaced it with a new law that allowed the executive to create a new logo for the state.
Adeleke signed a bill adopting a new logo for the state on Wednesday, but the design released on social media received criticism.
However, Adeleke, when discussing the decision to hold a logo design competition, said, “As a leader who listens, I have requested that we open the change of logo to more public input through this one-week competition.”
Earlier, an opposition party in the state, the Allied Peoples Movement, labeled the new logo as a misuse of taxpayers’ money.
Also, the state chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party reacted by saying the new logo did not meet the standard.
In a statement signed by the party’s chairman, Dr Tosin Odeyemi, obtained in Osogbo on Thursday, NNPP questioned whether the governor saw the new design before approving its bill.
The statement partly read, “The new logo is a source of shame for us in Osun. Who was awarded the contract? Didn’t Governor Adeleke see it before approving the bill? With a range of technologically savvy young people in Osun who can come up with good designs, how could a state government reveal such a poorly designed logo? Osun has been ridiculed on various social media platforms since the design was unveiled.
“What happened to the original logo that was used since the creation of Osun state? We all criticized it when the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola designed a new logo for the state and abandoned the one in use before he became governor. However, the one we have now is even worse compared to the one given to the state by Aregbesola.
“For those who are attentive in this government, a drastic step needs to be taken. The logo should be withdrawn from the public to protect Osun from this unnecessary criticism.”
Meanwhile, a release by the spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, on Thursday stated that the logo design competition would take place between April 19th and 26th.
“Those submitting a design should consider the prototype logo in terms of its contents and style. Submissions can be made in person, both in soft and printed copy, to the Office of the Commissioner, Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment.
“Entries can also be submitted online via [email protected] or [email protected], along with the designer's bio-data and contact details. The subject should be “OSUN STATE LOGO. The best design will be announced on April 28 and will be unveiled on April 30th during the new edition of Ipade Imole. The top three designers will be invited and compensated,” Rasheed said.
