Speaker Mike Johnson is proceeding with a group of four legislation plans, which includes assistance to Ukraine, that the House will seek to approve on Saturday.
Johnson sent a letter to House Republicans:
After getting a lot of feedback and having discussions with Members, the House Rules Committee will soon release the details of three bills that will support America’s national security interests and allies in Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and Ukraine, including a loan structure for aid, and improved strategy and accountability.
These will be presented for consideration under a structured rule that will allow for an amendment process, alongside a fourth bill that covers the REPO Act, TikTok bill, sanctions, and other measures to address Russia, China, and Iran.
The Rules Committee will also release details of a border security bill that includes the core components of H.R.2, under a separate rule that allows for amendments.
Details of the first three bills will be released soon, while the fourth bill under the same rule will be released later today. The border security bill will also be released later today.
By releasing details of these bills as soon as they are finished, we will make sure there is time for a thorough amendment process. We anticipate that the vote on final approval for these bills will take place on Saturday evening.
Thanks to all for your feedback and support. I appreciate every Member of this conference and am excited to continue our work together.
Crucially, Johnson did not alter the bill from what he proposed on Monday. There was no giving in to Marjorie Taylor Greene and the far right of the House.
Johnson is challenging Greene to bring up her motion to vacate against him.
If Johnson follows through with his end of the deal, expect a few Democrats to join in and vote against the motion to vacate, as Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries suggested would occur if Speaker Johnson passed a bill on Ukraine assistance.
Johnson and his aides reportedly don't mind using Democratic votes to maintain the speakership, so it looks like, unless things go wrong, and this is the Republican majority House so anything is possible, Ukraine assistance will be approved by Saturday night.
