“The RookieIn Season 6, Tim Bradford is facing a lot of challenges. Everything culminated in the recent episode, “Secrets and Lies,” where his past mistakes caught up with him, causing him to end his relationship with Lucy Chen.
The first five episodes of Season 6 hinted at problems for the beloved couple, known as #Chenford on social media. However, Tim and Lucy’s breakup will likely surprise fans who endured four seasons of anticipation before the couple finally got together.
Even Eric Winter, the actor who plays Bradford, was caught off guard by the storyline.
Winter was surprised by the separation storyline this season, considering that the couple had just gotten together in the previous season. Despite this, he welcomed the development, recognizing the complexities of new relationships.
Winter explained that he supported the storyline after discussions with Melissa O’Neil and series creator Alexei Hawley, emphasizing that they wanted the relationship to feel genuine, acknowledging that relationships have their share of challenges.
The surprising breakup occurred after Tim’s old military friend, Ray Watkins, reappeared in Episode 5. Due to this, Tim acted out of character and disappeared on Lucy in order to track down Ray. The tension escalated when Ray intruded into Lucy’s home, prompting Tim to finally open up to her, leading to a joint effort to stop Ray.
However, their collaboration didn’t bring them closer together; instead, it led to their separation at the end of the episode. Lucy questioned Tim’s decision, a sentiment likely shared by many fans.
Winter explained that Tim is at a breaking point due to his past catching up with him and the subsequent upheaval in his life.
Winter described Tim’s breakup as a spontaneous, emotional moment, suggesting that Tim made the decision to end the relationship during the scene itself.
Winter believes that Tim didn’t enter the scene with the intention to break up but was overcome with feelings of inadequacy. This caused him to become more resolute in his decision, as he felt that he wasn't good enough for Lucy and needed to distance himself from her due to his inner turmoil.
Winter also believes things could have turned out differently, and they could have “become stronger as a couple,” if not for Tim's past and his “lack of maturity” in relationships.
“I think the issue with Tim is, this is so different from who he is and even understanding or having the skills to communicate with a partner. I think he was so hurt by his ex,” Winter explained.
“In an ideal situation, they probably could have improved on this and become stronger because Lucy's definitely the right person to help that happen. She would have been there for him and she wouldn’t have abandoned him. But I think you see that lack of experience with a proper relationship, and a difficult upbringing, in Tim. It’s all sort of coming to a head, how kind of broken he is as a person. I think what you’re seeing is simply a bit of inexperience in how to handle a situation like this.”
The breakup isn't the only heartbreaker in “Secrets and Lies,” because Tim didn't just disrupt his personal life. The episode also saw the character cross some significant professional and ethical boundaries when he lied to his superior officers to cover up his past and present wrongdoings. It’s a line we’ve seen the character flirt with in the past, especially in the early season dynamics with his ex-wife, but now he’s officially crossed it. So what comes next?
“You’re gonna see consequences,” Winter hinted for what’s to come. “Tim is gonna deal with the fallout of this. It’s not going to be all swept under the rug. There’s going to be repercussions. Tim is going to have to find himself again, in the sense of what he does best and his purpose as an officer.”
That means you can expect to see a return to super-strict Bradford, but Winter also promises some hope for the character, even in his moment of darkness.
“He’ll get back to being a bit of a tough guy, you know, hardass Tim that he is. But in return, I know we’re gonna see a version of Tim where he’s open to kind of getting help and trying to unpack some of his issues. And hopefully, that will make him a better person and even a better cop.”
