“Game of Thrones” actor Kit Harington says the sequel series with Jon Snow as the main character that he proposed to HBO is currently on hold… for now at least.
“It’s not happening — and not happening anytime soon anyway,” Harington shared with Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on Tuesday. “We discussed some ideas but nothing really excited us. It just didn’t. I think we don’t want to do something that’s not valuable. So for now, we’re just putting it aside.”
The sci-fi fantasy drama series was one of HBO’s most successful shows, and gained a devoted fanbase following its premiere in April 2011. Considering the immense popularity of “Game of Thrones,” Harington mentioned that he is too invested in his character and the show to simply release a subpar sequel.
“I wouldn't have agreed to the development of a project centered around Jon Snow if I didn't believe there was potential, and there could have been,” he clarified. “HBO cares a lot about the character and I also care a lot, and we don’t want to release something that will tarnish the character. That would be the worst thing we could do.”
Harington added, “So unless we discover something in the future that really works, there's no point in rushing it. There's no point in continuing to develop something just for the sake of it and doing something I'm not interested in.”
HBO did not provide a comment when contacted by TheWrap.
News of the “GoT” extension was initially announced in June 2022, with Harington set to return as the brave member of the Nights Watch following the conclusion of the original series in May 2019.
Meanwhile, long-time fans can look forward to the return to Westeros with “House of the Dragon” Season 2 premiering on HBO on June 16.
All eight seasons of “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” Season 1 are presently available for streaming on Max.
