Crunchyroll is doing very well.
Sony’s anime imprint, which operates a dedicated (and very popular) streaming service, appeared at CinemaCon for the first time on Tuesday. There, the company revealed the acquisition and upcoming theatrical dates for three new films — “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,” “Blue Lock the Movie – Episode Nagi” and “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom.”
Those present were also shown the initial 10 minutes of the upcoming Crunchyroll film, “Spy x Family Code: White,” which will premiere in North American theaters on April 19.
Adapted from the popular volleyball series, “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” will debut in North American theaters starting May 31. The film will be released in Japanese with English subtitles or dubbed in English. Crunchyroll will also release it in other markets, such as Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina, Brazil, Central America, Mexico, and the Netherlands throughout May and June.
Since its release in Japan in February, it has earned over 8.5 billion yen (approximately $57 million USD), making it the highest-grossing movie at the Japanese box office this year (so far).
Crunchyroll also revealed the acquisition of the soccer anime film “Blue Lock the Movie – Episode Nagi” for North American and select international markets. It will premiere in North American theaters beginning on June 28, in both Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English. International release dates will be announced later. The first season of “Blue Lock” is currently available on Crunchyroll.
The streaming service also announced that it had obtained the North American and select international theatrical rights for the video game fantasy film “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom.” Specific dates for release are yet to be announced, although all four seasons of “Overlord” are now available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
CinemaCon 2024 is taking place until April 11 in Las Vegas.
