The Nigerian Navy, along with members of the National Youth Service Corps and other stakeholders, worked together to clean drainages and remove garbage piles in Igbokoda, the main town of Ilaje Local Government Area in Ondo State on Tuesday.
The event called “Klean up Igbokoda,” organized by Navy Captain Mamman Alushi, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Igbokoda, was part of the military base's social responsibility to maintain a clean environment.
The FOB Commanding Officer stated on Tuesday that this was not the first time the base had involved the local community in such an activity.
Reports indicate that the total area covered during the clean-up was approximately five kilometers.
He clarified, “The exercise is a regular activity and aims to build a closer and more beneficial relationship with the civilian population.
“The exercise is in line with current strategic military thinking in the country, which emphasizes population security.”
The Navy boss described national security as multi-faceted, not just about military force, but also about human security, encompassing environmental and health security.
In his statement, the founder of Dakiz Human Development Initiative, Mr T. Akingbade, commended the commanding officer and personnel of the FOB Igbokoda for collaborating with his organization to ensure a clean and safe environment for Igbokoda residents.
He also urged residents to refrain from dumping garbage in drainages and waterways to prevent erosion blockages.
