On Monday, April 8, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will bring charges against the former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele at the Ikeja State High Court in Lagos for allegedly misusing his power in allocating billions of United States dollars.
Emefiele and Henry Isioma Omole will face 26 counts before Justice Rahman Oshodi.
The charge, marked ID/23787c/2024, dated April 3, 2024, was filed by Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).
The EFCC claims that Emefiele abused his office between 2022 and 2023 in Lagos.
The Commission alleges that Emefiele directed the allocation of $2,136,391,737.33 without bids, which was prejudicial to the rights of Nigerians.
The EFCC further alleges that Emefiele directed the allocation of $291,945,785.59 without bids, between 2020 and 2021, which was prejudicial to the rights of Nigerians.
In 2021, Emefiele was alleged to have directed the special allocation of $1,769,254,793.16, which was prejudicial to the rights of Nigerians.
The sum involved in count four was $370,872,893.01.
Emefiele's co-defendant Omole was alleged to have accepted $110,000 as a reward for allocating foreign exchange by the Central Bank.
According to the charge, the offences committed contravened Section 73 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
