Donald Trump is attempting to alter the election laws of Nebraska, which may lead to a tie in the 2024 election. And, if that occurs, “The Daily Show” correspondent Desi Lydic anticipates the country transforming into “The Purge.”
Nebraska currently allocates its electoral votes by district, rather than awarding all of them to the winning candidate of the entire state. In 2020, Joe Biden received an electoral vote from Omaha, while Trump obtained the remaining votes.
However, Trump is now seeking to modify the system so that the state, which traditionally leans heavily Republican, must award all electoral votes to the sole victor.
“The implications are significant,” explained Lydic. “Biden’s simplest path to the White House is to win Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan along with that one Nebraska vote. Securing that vote would enable him to lose every other swing state and still win the election.”
She continued, “But if Nebraska makes this change, the election could result in a tie. And you might be wondering what happens in that case? Well, it’s quite straightforward. Have you ever seen the ‘Purge’ movies?”
For those who haven’t viewed those films, the concept is straightforward: every year, for 24 hours, all criminal activities, including murder, are legal. As a result, things become quite frightening very rapidly.
Naturally, not all Nebraskans are pleased with this potential alteration, with one state representative referring to Trump as a “pathetic worm” who “believes that he knows what’s best for Nebraska and what Nebraskans want.” However, Lydic took some issue with those remarks.
“Pardon me ma’am. But what happened to decorum?” stated Lydic. “That's former president pathetic worm.”
