The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, announced on Thursday that 141 cases of terrorism, 214 cases of kidnapping, and 537 cases of murder were reported to the police in the last eight weeks.
Egbetokun also mentioned that 3,685 suspects were arrested for their involvement in various crimes, and 401 kidnap victims were rescued.
Egbetokun made these remarks while responding to journalists' questions at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja.
He stated, “I am happy to report significant progress, driven by the implementation of various strategies aimed at reducing the rising trend of criminal activities across the nation following our last conference on February 8, 2024.
“In the past eight weeks, we documented 141 incidents of terrorism/secessionist attacks, 537 cases of murder, 126 cases of armed robbery, 214 cases of kidnapping, and 39 cases of unlawful possession of firearms.
“Also, during the same period, the Nigeria Police Force detained 3,685 suspects for their involvement in various crimes, rescued 401 kidnap victims, and recovered 216 firearms, 3,601 ammunition, and 82 vehicles.
“In the last nine months, we have collectively presented checks totaling N7,263,391,051.73 to 2,5143 families of deceased police officers.”
The IG stated that the police will continue to strive for excellence by taking a more proactive approach to policing.
He mentioned, “Our responses to the current internal security threats require strategic deployments that are not only proactive but also technology and intelligence-driven.
“Through careful analysis of available information, we will strive to anticipate criminal activities, disrupt their illegal networks, and promptly apprehend perpetrators. It is crucial that we remain attentive and adaptable in our approach, constantly refining our strategies to stay ahead of evolving threats.”
