Former President Muhammadu Buhari has shared his sympathies for the passing of experienced labor leader and former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ali Chiroma.
Chiroma, who was 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 2 at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after a short illness.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Buhari expressed that the deceased made significant contributions to the economy and the labor movement that extended beyond the nation's borders.
“Ali Chiroma was unstoppable – full of life, insightful and courageous as a leader. He made a significant impact on the labor movement and my political career, being a devoted supporter who stood by me prior to and during my presidency,
“My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family, the government, and the people of Borno State. May Allah grant them the strength to cope with the loss,” the statement conveyed.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, also expressed sorrow over Chiroma's passing.
Zulum’s message was shared in a statement by his New Media aide, Abdurrahman Bundi, on Wednesday.
“I express my condolences to the family and relatives of the late Ali Chiroma; undoubtedly, the loss of a loved one is painful, but as Muslims, we all believe that every soul shall experience death,” the statement quoted Zulum as saying, and added, “Thus, I urge you to find comfort in the Almighty Allah.”
The governor also stated, “Ali Chiroma was a genuine advocate for the working class, a courageous leader who devoted his life to the well-being of Nigerian workers nationwide,” and added, “He will be remembered for his perseverance and dedication to the cause of Nigerian workers.”
Chiroma served as the President of the NLC between 1984 and 1988.
He was the President of the defunct Rural Health Workers of Nigeria, which is now recognized as the Medical and Health Workers Association, in 1960.
Zulum offered prayers for the peaceful rest of the former unionist and esteemed statesman.
He also expressed sympathy for the Borno Elders Forum on the loss of one of their devoted members.
