“Morning Joe” cohost Mika Brzezinski strongly criticized the negative way the Republican Party has portrayed abortion on Tuesday while comparing their policies to those of Democrats and examining how President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris aim to change Florida’s “extreme” legislation on the issue.
Criticizing the GOP’s “harmful political agenda” on women’s right to choose, the MSNBC host stated that the far right and Trump Republicans, as well as right-to-life activists, have tainted the term ‘abortion.’”
“They make it seem like some kind of crime committed by a lazy and immoral woman,” Brzezinski said, speaking to a panel including Jennifer Palmieri, Symone Sanders-Townsend, and John Heilemann. “The hypocrisy is unbelievable, but I won’t go off track. You don’t want me to do that.”
The Supreme Court of Florida confirmed a 15-week ban on abortion and will permit a proposed amendment that would guarantee protections in the state constitution on the November ballot. The ruling also means a six-week abortion ban could come into effect in Florida.
In a recent memo, the Biden-Harris campaign sees Florida as “winnable” and a place to gain ground for a 2024 presidential victory for the current president. Brzezinski suggested they could achieve this by making reproductive rights a central issue in the election.
“At the same time, I believe that Democrats need to choose their words wisely. I would use the word ‘life.’ I would use the word life. Life of the mother. Especially in the cases of unviable pregnancies, we see mothers’ lives at risk,” Brzezinski stated. “Right to have life — IVF. Right to have a family. I would take their word, and I would instruct them on what to do with it.
“It’s abortion healthcare,” she continued. “It is part of our normal healthcare. That message needs to be conveyed to Democrats and Republicans who will vote on this issue because it impacts their everyday life.”
