Nigerian sprinter Favour Ashe wants to win all races this season and has his eyes on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games final after running the fastest time in the world this season on Saturday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Ashe clocked 9.99 seconds in the men’s 100m at the Florida Relays, which has been officially recognized as the world's best in 2024 by the World Athletics.
He is the 12th Nigerian to break the 10-second mark.
Making his first outdoor race appearance of the season and his second overall in 2024, Ashe achieved the first sub-10 time of the season and immediately met the Paris 2024 Olympic standard with his rapid time.
He dominated the competition, with Jamarion Stubbs coming in second at 10.18s and Jamal Miller third at 10.19s.
Following the race, the 21-year-old expressed his anticipation for a more successful season.
“Last year didn’t go as planned. I discussed with my coach, and my aim for this season is to win everything. Hopefully, I can qualify for the Olympics, make it to the final, and then take it from there,” Ashe told Citius Mag.
Ashe is the second Nigerian to set a world record this year, following African Games gold medalist Consider Ekanem, who ran 10.10s at the inaugural Dynamic Outdoor Meet on January 27 at the Nigerian Navy Sports Centre, Ojo, Lagos.
He also hopes to lead Nigeria to the men’s 100m final at the Olympics, following Enoch Adegoke, who became the first man since Davidson Ezinwa and Olapade Adeniken to reach the 100m final of the Olympic Games.
