The Peoples Democratic Party has strongly criticized the Rivers State House of Assembly and the All Progressives Congress for trying to pressure Governor Siminalayi Fubara to act unlawfully.
The PDP called the lawmakers' renewed threat to impeach Fubara shameful and disruptive to the state.
Sydney Gbara, the state PDP Publicity Secretary, made this statement in Port Harcourt on Monday.
On Sunday, twenty-seven lawmakers, who support the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, hinted at revisiting Fubara's impeachment to fulfill their duties and uphold the constitution.
The Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, accused Fubara of acting unlawfully despite signing a presidential peace agreement during the political crisis in the state.
However, the Rivers PDP Publicity Secretary, Gbara, urged the lawmakers to stop disturbing the state's peace and allow Fubara to focus on governance and serving the people.
He questioned the legitimacy of the 27 lawmakers following their defection from the PDP to the APC.
Gbara stated, “Those individuals were initially favored by Governor Fubara's peace accord despite a court's recognition of Rt. Hon Edison Ehie as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. They were allowed to continue operating, but after defecting to the APC without any internal crises in the PDP, their seats were constitutionally vacant.
“Despite numerous court cases challenging their legality and seeking the interpretation of Section 109 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria's Constitution, justice will be served to resolve their status.
“Their actions are a disgrace to the Rivers people, betraying the goodwill of their constituents by pursuing selfish agendas that worsen the state's crisis.
“The impeachment threats are baseless and motivated by personal gain, which the people of Rivers will oppose.
“If they want to know the public opinion, they should seek the masses' views on the streets.
“They are operating illegally, so their laws have no impact on the Rivers people.”
