The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, gave out grains to elderly and vulnerable residents in his area on Monday. He urged the government to send aid to poor Nigerians through traditional leaders.
Oba Akanbi went to Molaasan Royal Compound and other places in Iwo to distribute 5kg bags of rice and money to help vulnerable residents cope with the tough economy. He assured that traditional leaders would be fair in distributing the aid.
There has been disagreement among governors and opposition parties over the sharing of tons of grains provided by the Federal Government to ease the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
The opposition party in Osun State, All Progressives Congress, has criticized the state government for not fully using the cash and grains received from the Federal Government to help vulnerable residents.
The Oluwo expressed concern about the less privileged not benefiting from the post-subsidy removal interventions of the Federal Government. He suggested that traditional rulers could be a transparent channel to reach the needy with aid.
The monarch emphasized that traditional rulers serve as a link between the government and the people. He demonstrated this by personally visiting people in their homes to deliver aid.
During a visit to Aso Villa, the monarch listened to the President and encouraged Nigerians to support each other during this difficult time in order to overcome suffering and fight corruption together.
Oba Akanbi believes that traditional rulers are best suited to deliver aid to the people and emphasized the importance of sincerity in the distribution process. He also highlighted that he distributed aid without discrimination.
