The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Dr. James Odedeji, advised Christians not only to celebrate Easter, but also to make sure they understand the benefits of the celebration.
The clergyman explained that Easter celebration ensures Christians triumph over death.
During his Easter Day sermon on Sunday at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja, Lagos, the bishop pointed out that Jesus Christ’s resurrection from death brought redemption and salvation to humanity.
He mentioned, “Jesus’ resurrection bolstered the faith of the world, particularly Christians, as stated in Acts of the Apostles, Chapter, Verse 12.
“The promise of eternal life and immortality for humanity is another advantage that Easter, or the resurrection of Jesus Christ, brings.
“Followers of Christ would have felt exceedingly unhappy and without hope if Jesus had not risen from the dead.”
The bishop highlighted the laying of the foundation of the Christian faith as another benefit of Jesus Christ's resurrection, stating that the resurrection led to the spread of the good news, which is the essence of the church.
He stated that much of the Old Testament prophesied the coming of Jesus, his death, and resurrection for the redemption of humanity.
He referenced the empty tomb and numerous post-resurrection appearances of Jesus as undeniable evidence of the resurrection.
