The Enugu State Police Command has reported that two individuals associated with the Eastern Security Network, a security group of the Indigenous People of Biafra, were killed during a raid on their base.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the raid resulted in the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one submachine gun, one stainless pump-action gun, 27 live rounds, and 23 expended rounds of 7.62mm caliber ammunition.
Ndukwe stated that the raid, conducted by members of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad on March 30, 2024 at around 2:30 a.m, was based on intelligence and targeted the group's camp in Akwuke community, Enugu South Local Government Area.
The statement emphasized that the raid was part of the Easter crime prevention measures overseen by the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu.
“The operatives encountered resistance from the renegades, who opened fire upon seeing them, but they were overpowered by the superior firepower of the operatives,” according to Ndukwe.
Two of the individuals were neutralised during the confrontation, while others managed to escape with varying degrees of gunshot wounds. In addition to the weapons mentioned earlier, five live cartridges and a small blue-colored Gideon New Testament bible used to conceal suspected items were also recovered.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the breech number of the recovered AK-47 had been removed, and that the group was responsible for multiple attacks and theft of police officers’ rifles, given that the rifle’s magazine bore the Nigeria Police Force color. Further discreet investigations are ongoing.
“In the meantime, the Commissioner of Police has commended the operatives for their successful operation, and has reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to eliminating unrepentant criminals from Enugu State.
He has also requested ongoing support from the public, and urged citizens and owners of medical facilities, in particular, to report individuals found with gunshot wounds to the police,” as stated in the release.
