Several people had to find temporary places to stay after a fire on Friday afternoon. fire in Winnipeg’s This happened in the Centennial neighborhood.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedics arrived at a two-story house on Alexander Avenue around 3:45 p.m. on March 29.
Officials said they attacked the fire from inside and got it under control by 4:30 p.m.
Everyone got out of the house before the crews got there, but they rescued several cats. Nobody got hurt.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team is helping those who need to find a new place to stay.
Most of the damage was in the room where the fire started, and the first investigation suggests it started because someone didn't dispose of smoking materials properly.
Fire officials are reminding people to follow these safety tips:
- Smoking materials should always be put out in a proper ashtray or metal container.
- Before throwing away cigarette butts and ashes, make sure they're out – putting water or sand on them is the best way to do that.
- Don't throw butts from balconies, decks, or car windows, and don't get rid of them near plants like grass, leaves, or brush.
- Never use a plant pot as an ashtray.
