Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan may return to play their characters in “Freaky Friday 2,” the follow-up to the 2003 family comedy at Disney, as per an insider familiar with the project.
Nisha Ganatra, the director of “Welcome to Chippendales,” is scheduled to direct. Jordan Weiss penned the screenplay for the sequel.
Filming is aiming for a summer start. Curtis shared a photo of herself and Lohan on Instagram on Friday. The sequel has been in progress for a while.
Andrew Gunn, the producer of the 2003 film, is also coming back to produce “Freaky Friday 2” alongside former Disney executive Kristin Burr. Currently, it is unclear if the sequel will be released in theaters or on a streaming platform.
In 2003, “Freaky Friday” featured Lohan and Curtis in a new version of the 1976 film of the same name, which was based on Mary Rodgers' novel. The film was also adapted into a musical.
The original movie centers on mother Tess Coleman (Curtis) and her teenage daughter Anna (Lohan), who have a strained relationship and don’t see eye-to-eye on many things. After a disagreement, they wake up the following morning to find they have swapped bodies.
20 years later, Curtis won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Lohan most recently starred in the popular Netflix romantic comedy, “Irish Wish.”
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
