During the Easter long weekend and spring break for many students in Alberta, the RCMP are asking drivers to be ready for busy highways.
Constable Kelcy Davidge stated on Friday morning that more drivers are seen on the roads during long weekends and extra time off.
While winter usually gets attention for dangerous road conditions, spring driving also has its hazards.
According to Davidge, spring can bring unpredictable road conditions due to Alberta's unpredictable weather.
She explained that the weather could change suddenly from sunny to snowy and icy, and drivers may encounter different weather conditions within the province.
She advised being cautious on the roads and preparing for changing weather and road conditions, as well as having essential items in the vehicle for emergencies.
Davidge provided the following tips for drivers:
- Clear all ice from windows before driving.
- Remove snow from vehicles, including headlights, taillights, and roof.
- Drive slower on slippery, snowy roads.
- Keep the vehicle stocked with extra warm clothes, snacks, snow shovel, booster cables, tow rope or chain.
If stranded on the highway for any reason, do not leave the vehicle.
It's advised to periodically turn on the vehicle for warmth and dryness if stranded on the highway, while making sure the tailpipe is clear of ice and snow and staying in the vehicle.
Davidge noted that RCMP will be patrolling Alberta highways throughout the long weekend.
