The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has sent a total of 662 staff, including Special Marshalls, to increase the visibility of the corps and make sure traffic flows well during Easter celebrations.
They have also sent out 10 patrol cars, two ambulances and one tow truck to effectively cover important areas, respond quickly to distress calls, and clear obstructions from the roads during this time.
This information was included in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SRC Paul James, titled ‘Easter celebration : Need for safety consciousness’ which was provided to our correspondent on Friday.
The statement said, ” It is the season of Easter Celebration! Friday 29th March – Monday 1st April, 2024 the Easter will be celebrated across the world.
“Christians and other Nigerians will take advantage of this period to travel across the length and breadth of Nigeria to celebrate with family members and friends.
“As expected, traffic will increase during this festive period, leading to congestion, gridlocks, road obstructions and accidents if not prevented, resulting in injuries and fatalities.
“In light of this, the Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps, Akwa Ibom State Sector Command, Corps Commander Matthew O. Olonisaye, in an effort to ensure the safety of all road users, warns drivers, tricycle riders and motorcyclists against reckless driving.
“To improve the visibility of the Corps and ensure adequate and strategic deployment of personnel and resources, as well as ensure smooth traffic flow for business activities in Akwa Ibom State, in line with the Corps' goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 5%, a total of 662 operatives including Special Marshals have been strategically deployed ahead of the Easter Season Celebration to manage major routes in the state for traffic control, while 10 patrol vehicles, two ambulances and one tow truck are deployed for effective coverage of critical areas, prompt response to distress calls and quick removal of obstructions from the highways during the period.
