As a final effort to restart the impeachment investigation, Rep. James Comer has requested President Biden to testify.
Comer questioned Biden on topics that have already been addressed, then concluded his letter by asking him to testify:
As Chairman of the Committee, as well as asking you to respond to the questions in this letter, I invite you to participate in a public hearing where you can clarify, under oath, your involvement with your family’s income sources and how it was generated. As previous presidents have done, including President Ford's testimony before the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice of the House Judiciary Committee in 1974.
The Committee is willing to work with your schedule and suggests April 16, 2024, for the hearing. The White House can reach out to James Mandolfo or Jake Greenberg with Committee staff at (202) 225-5074 for any inquiries about the hearing. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the primary oversight committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. Furthermore, according to article I, section 2, of the Constitution—that the “House of Representatives . . . shall have the sole Power of Impeachment”—on December 13, 2023, the House of Representatives formalized an impeachment inquiry into this and other matters.
Once President Biden stops laughing, the obvious answer to Comer’s request will be no. If Chair Comer had any evidence of an impeachable offense, he wouldn’t need Biden’s testimony.
Comer lacks evidence that Biden engaged in any wrongdoing, so his letter is essentially a request for Biden to rescue his impeachment investigation by testifying.
Joe Biden will not be providing testimony before the Oversight Committee. Biden is not going to assist Comer in reviving his defunct impeachment investigation by giving it credibility with his testimony.
Chair Comer’s letter represents one of the final attempts from a desperate individual who acknowledges that his impeachment investigation is over and done.
