Ontario’s minimum wage will rise later this year to $17.20 an hour.
The yearly increase on October 1st is linked to the cost of living and amounts to a 3.9 percent raise from the existing $16.55 per hour.
Labour Minister David Piccini has stated that the government is providing businesses with certainty and predictability by announcing the increase six months in advance.
The government explains that the new minimum wage will be the second highest among the provinces, following British Columbia’s rate of $17.40 per hour.
The Ontario Living Wage Network indicates that the living wage in the Greater Toronto Area is approximately $25 per hour.
After taking office in 2018, the Progressive Conservatives called off a planned increase in the minimum wage from $14 to $15 per hour, but later in January 2022, they raised it to $15 and connected future increases to inflation.
