The federal government’s campaign before the budget continues for a second day — this time focusing on parents and child care providers.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces that the government intends to give over $1 billion in inexpensive loans, grants, and student loan forgiveness to expand child care throughout Canada.
Trudeau revealed the plan in Surrey, B.C., as part of the Liberal government’s push to regain support from younger voters and middle-class families.
He explains that an extra $60 million will be reserved for non-repayable grants for qualified child care centres to create new spaces or renovate.
The government will also provide student loan forgiveness to early childhood educators in rural and remote areas, as well as an additional $10 million over two years to enhance their numbers with additional training.
The funding for more affordable child care spaces is an expansion of the government’s $10-a-day child care program, which was accepted by all provinces and territories.
On Wednesday, Trudeau began the pre-budget tour by describing a $15 million fund and a bill of rights to improve the protection of tenants who rent their homes.
