The City of Guelph wants to find a location for a proposed temporary structured encampment.
On Wednesday, the city announced that it is asking property owners to donate land to help address homelessness.
This is a response to Mayor Cam Guthrie's request for a report on the logistics, costs and processes for a temporary encampment site, including potential locations owned by the city or privately.
James Goodram, manager of Economic Development and Tourism, explained that they are now focusing on city-owned properties and following up on the private sector aspect.
The property owner must be willing to donate the land for at least three years. The city prefers a spot near downtown but is open to other locations.
Goodram mentioned they need to evaluate those sites first and do not have a specific size requirement for the land.
The concept of a temporary structured encampment was initially discussed at a city council meeting last October. These encampments would feature secured tiny structures with facilities like bathrooms and kitchens instead of tents.
Those interested in donating land should contact the city via email at [email protected] by April 26. The city is requesting land owners who are willing to donate property for at least three years to support efforts to address homelessness. by April 26.
Goodram indicated that interested parties should express their interest and details will be discussed later.
